Guru Teachers Are Imperfect Human Beings, Too, But You Can Still Learn From Them

Why You Shouldn’t Dismiss Their Lessons Just Because They Have A Dirty Past

Think of all the famous Gurus worldwide: Toni Robbins, Sadhguru, Don Miguel Ruiz, Oprah, Iyanla Vanzant, Teal Swan; the list goes on. All of these people use the bathroom, and what drops into the toilet doesn’t smell too pretty. Why use this example? Because it brings us back down to earth. They’re human. It should be expected that they’ve made mistakes and will continue to make mistakes and have some shameful moments from their past. No matter how mindful, mature, and disciplined they are, they’re still human. But that doesn’t mean that the moment the media reveals some dark deep secret about them, we should suddenly call them “fake” and stop reading their books or attending their seminars. Sure, they illuminate the way with their own enlightenment, but they were never meant to be perfect saints.

I’d like to think that the way a person develops into a Guru, (someone with highly valuable knowledge to share) is someone who (at some point in their own lives) had experienced enough of their own failure, shame, trauma, insecurity, or bad behavior that they can now extend compassion to others because they’ve once walked in similar shoes.
